It is really annoying when you use an online translator and make no effort to clean up the translations.

http://zmmu.msu.ru/ab_inf.htm Tel. 629 4454 Notice how the architect, Konstantin Bykovsky (1841-1906), used decorative details of sculptured animal and floral motifs to echo the museum's collections.
  • Moscow Manege, AkilinaL wrote 14 years ago:
Built by Augustin Betancourt in 1817 to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the departure of the French. Notable for having no internal supports despite its size of 7500 square meters. The roof rested on the external Doric columns. Originally it was designed for military reviews and parades and a riding school. Unfortunately the design was not as successful as expected and within a few years several of the wooden trusses showed cracks. In 1823 engineers renewed the roof by increasing the number of wooden supports from thirty to forty-five. In 1825 Osip Bove designed the decoration of fasces, swords, helmets and other military regalia in the cornice frieze. In the mid 19th century concerts and other exhibitions took place. In early 1868, Hector Berlioz conducted a performance arranged by Nikolai Rubinstein, director of the Moscow Conservatory that included 500 performers and a crowd police estimated to be over 12,600. After the 1917 Revolution, it served as the Kremlin Garage. In the 1930s steel supports were added to hold up the sagging ceiling. In the 1950s the space was renovated and subsequently known as the Central Exhibition Hall. In 1962 at a modern art exhibition, Nikita Khrushchev made his famous comment referring to avant-garde art as degenerate. In 2004 the building burned and by the time the flames were extinguished, two firemen had died, the roof collapsed and only the external walls remained. In 2006 a newly built Manezh opened.
  • Four Seasons Hotel Moscow 5*, AkilinaL wrote 14 years ago:
The entire structure known as the Hotel Moskva was not built at the same time. This photo (http://mosday.ru/photos/?1_785) taken in the 1960s shows two buildings which were removed and replaced by additional sections to the hotel in the 1970s.

  • Petrovsky Passage, AkilinaL wrote 14 years ago:
Actually GUM was built in 1889-1893 and this was built ten years later by architects S. M. Kalugin, B. Freidenberg and V. Shukhov. Style is undoubtedly similar - Shukhov was involved in the construction of GUM. The bas-relief, Worker, designed by the sculpture Manizer and fixed to the building's facade in 1921 at the Petrovka Ulitsa entrance, is a rare surviving example of Lenin's 1920 plan for "Sculptural Propaganda." In the late 1980s Turkish contractors from the company Enka restored the building which reopened as a mall in 1990.
  • Revolution Square, AkilinaL wrote 14 years ago:
For about a hundred years beginning in 1819 at which time this square was created when the Neglinna River was placed underground, this was known as Resurrection Square. After the 1917 Revolution it was renamed.

  • St. John the Apostle 'Under the Elm' church, AkilinaL wrote 14 years ago:
Founded in 1896, the Museum of Moscow History (Музей Истории Москвы) has been housed in a 19th century church since 1936. The Empire style building, formerly the Church of St. John the Divine Under the Elm, was built in built in 1658 and remodeled between 1825 and 1837 and closed in 1925. Note the single broad dome that clearly is missing something, the truncated bell tower and the six-columned portico with classical pediment. This location that displays only a tiny part of its collection, is one of several sites operated by the city museum. Despite its seemingly small size, this branch has over a million exhibits, with paintings, maps and various city treasures. This branch is only one part of the United Museum Association Moscow City Museum, which includes The Old English Court, Moscow Archeological Museum, the Museum of Christ the Savior Cathedral, the Kuzminki Russian Country Estate Museum, the Lefortovo Museum, and the Mirek Russian Accordion Museum.
